A Career-Defining Architectural Leadership Opportunity

MCG Architecture is seeking a licensed and experienced Project Director to help lead the continued growth and long-term development of its Maitland office.

This is a critical leadership hire and an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished architect who wants to have a visible impact on a growing architectural practice. The Maitland office was established approximately four years ago and has steadily expanded to a team of 17 professionals. The office includes a talented group of emerging architects and design professionals who are ready for strong technical leadership, mentorship and a clearer path toward professional registration.

The Managing Principal is currently the office’s only registered architect. As the practice continues to grow, MCG is seeking an additional licensed architect who can provide project leadership, technical oversight, quality assurance and meaningful mentorship to the next generation of professionals.

This position offers significantly more influence than a traditional Project Director role. The selected individual will help shape the future of the office, strengthen its technical capabilities, develop emerging leaders and provide additional registered architectural leadership as the team expands.

The ideal candidate will bring approximately 10–20 years of architectural experience, active professional registration and a combination of project delivery, technical leadership, financial management, client development and team-building abilities.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Managing Principal, the Project Director will provide strategic, technical and operational leadership across multiple projects, clients and project teams.

The Project Director will establish project scopes, budgets, schedules and staffing plans; monitor team performance and billable utilization; oversee contracts and financial results; maintain quality-control standards; and serve as a trusted senior-level advisor to clients.

A major component of the position will be developing the office’s next generation of licensed architects. The Project Director will provide professional mentorship, encourage registration, help employees understand the licensing process and create opportunities for emerging professionals to gain the experience necessary for career advancement.

The successful candidate will understand both the architectural and business sides of professional practice. This individual must be comfortable balancing design and technical leadership with project profitability, contract administration, client service, staff development and business growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.

  • Active architectural registration is required and represents the highest-priority qualification for this search.

  • Current Florida architectural registration or the ability to obtain registration in Florida through reciprocity within an agreed-upon period.

  • Approximately 10–20 years of progressively responsible architectural experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading architectural projects from proposal and programming through construction completion.

  • Strong knowledge of architectural design, technical documentation, permitting and construction administration.

  • Experience providing professional and technical oversight to architectural project teams.

  • Experience managing project budgets, staffing plans, schedules, contracts and consultant relationships.

  • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, zoning regulations and professional-practice standards.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, clients and teams simultaneously.

  • Strong leadership, negotiation, presentation and client-management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Sound judgment and the ability to address complex project, contractual and personnel matters.

  • Ability and willingness to sign and seal documents when required and professionally appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring emerging architectural professionals and supporting employees pursuing registration.

  • Experience leading or helping grow an architectural office, studio or practice group.

  • Experience with retail, office, hospitality or branded commercial projects.

  • Experience leading multi-site, prototype, rollout or national account programs.

  • Responsibility for project profitability, revenue forecasts, invoicing and accounts receivable.

  • Demonstrated success developing client relationships and generating repeat business.

  • Experience negotiating professional-services agreements and consultant contracts.

  • Existing relationships with owners, developers, brokers, contractors or commercial real estate professionals.

  • Experience mentoring project managers, project architects, designers and technical staff.

  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office and project-accounting or resource-planning platforms.

  • Active NCARB Certificate or architectural registration in multiple states.

  • Experience within a multi-office architectural or engineering organization.

What Success Looks Like

During the first year, the Project Director will be expected to:

  • Establish credibility with the Managing Principal, project teams and clients.

  • Become an engaged registered architectural leader within the Maitland office.

  • Develop a thorough understanding of MCG’s clients, projects, standards and operating practices.

  • Assume leadership responsibility for assigned projects and client relationships.

  • Strengthen technical review and quality-control procedures.

  • Identify emerging professionals who are prepared to pursue registration.

  • Begin establishing individual licensure and development plans for appropriate team members.

  • Improve project planning, staffing visibility and workload forecasting.

  • Deliver projects on schedule, within budget and in accordance with MCG’s quality standards.

  • Maintain accurate revenue, billing and staffing projections.

  • Identify and resolve project risks before they affect clients or financial performance.

  • Help build stronger leadership depth across the 17-person office.

  • Generate client confidence, repeat business and referrals.

  • Become a trusted partner to the Managing Principal in the continued development of the office.

Why Join MCG Architecture?

This is a rare opportunity to join a growing architectural office at an important stage in its development.

The Maitland team has expanded steadily since opening approximately four years ago and now includes 17 professionals. The office has established meaningful momentum, and the selected Project Director will have the opportunity to help determine what comes next.

Unlike positions in which senior architects inherit a rigid structure, this role offers the ability to influence:

  • The future leadership structure of the office

  • Architectural quality and technical standards

  • Employee development and professional registration

  • Project delivery procedures

  • Client relationships and business growth

  • Staffing and resource planning

  • Office culture and professional expectations

  • Long-term operational continuity

For a registered architect with approximately 10–20 years of experience who wants to lead projects, develop people and help build the future of a growing practice, this opportunity offers substantial visibility, responsibility and professional impact.
