Function


Works within a team of planning professionals to develop comprehensive plans, ordinances and programs to provide for future growth, utilization and revitalization of land and physical facilities of the City. Evaluates land use and development proposals and implements planning policies, which support adopted City goals and objectives. Perform duties within a self-directed work team under the general supervision of the  Senior City Planner.
Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Urban or Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Social Science or a related field of study as determined by the Director.  
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year in a technical or research oriented customer service area, preferably in the public sector.  
  • Some working knowledge of GIS preferred. 
  • Direct work experience equivalent to the City Planner level, preferably obtained in a municipal, state or federal agency or related area preferred. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria. 
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to an offer of employment or promotion.  
Additional Requirements
  • Requires some local travel and may require working beyond a standard 40-hour workweek to include evenings and weekends. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain exceptional customer service while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency in a timely manner; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relations with co-workers and internal and external customers; ability to foster effective public relations and work effectively with diverse groups. 
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
