WORK LOCATION
- This position will be located at Plants Wansley and Yates. Opportunities at other construction sites in the region may become available as new projects start construction.
- Day trips to Georgia Power Company (GPC) Headquarters and other BESS projects sites may be required as needed.
- Some relocation/per diem assistance may be available if the successful candidate does not already live within a reasonable commute distance.
- Remote working opportunities will be extremely limited for this position.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Construction Manager for Wansley and Yates BESS is responsible for the construction oversight of the BESS projects as well as the Technical Shared Services (TSS) main point of contact for all aspects of implementation needs. The role is responsible for making sure Southern Company’s values are the driver behind the work being performed no matter what the task; prioritizing safety, compliance, and quality standards set forth in Engineering, Construction and Procurement (EPC) agreements for the projects. This position is responsible for interfacing onsite work crews and internal company organizations including various TSS departments as well as groups outside of TSS such as Generation Development, GPC Renewable & Resilient Generation, GPC Power Delivery, Safety & Health, Environmental Affairs, and more throughout the project lifecycle. The construction manager will be responsible for site staffing and development of that staff utilizing performance feedback tools and will have 5+ direct reports.
Plant Wansley BESS is a 500MW (2,000MW-Hr) project, Plant Yates BESS consists of a 320MW (1,280MW-Hr) project and a 250 MW (1,000MW-Hr) project all of which were approved as part of GPC’s All-Source RFP in December of 2025. Projects are currently in engineering and pre-mobilization phase with anticipated construction starting at all projects in 2026.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership Experience:
-
10+ years’ experience in one of the following areas:
- Construction management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for heavy industrial projects, or electric utility generation and/or transmission systems
- Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members)

Experience working in (or in direct support of) at least one of the following areas is preferred:

Power plant operations or prior assignments within a power plant
- Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil, etc.)
- Distribution or transmission or prior assignments within these areas
- Experience working in an EPC arrangement with external EPC partner
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes and ability to manage them.
- Must possess strong management and organizational skills.
- Ability to develop teams through constant feedback and setting clear expectations
- Knowledge of OSHA and applicable environmental regulations. Knowledge of Southern Company Safety & Health program and Georgia Power environmental programs are a plus.
- Adequate knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Know and assist Project Controls with schedule inputs/updates, cost tracking, budget forecasting, commodity tracking and risk identification/quantification.
- Understanding of project change control processes.
- Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions.
- Ability to identify problems and assist in providing resolutions to problems.
- Ability to interface with vendors and contractors while representing the best interests of Southern Company.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with a wide range of Southern Company organizations.
Education/Certification:

Associates (2-year) or Bachelors (4-year) degree preferred but not required.
- Preferred disciplines include; Building Science, Construction Management, Engineering, or another related field.
- Project Management Professional or similar accreditation/professional license beneficial.
