Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

 The Department of Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU) invites applications for the position of Lecturer in the area of Studio Design. This appointment for this position has an anticipated start date of August 16, 2026, and the initial length of the appointment will be one (1) academic semester (August 16, 2026 – December 31, 2026). This appointment will be for 40% FTE.

The candidate is expected to teach studio courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.  Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

• Master’s of Architecture

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in Studio Teaching pedagogy in a Design related discipline. 

• Experience in architectural practice

About the Architecture Department

The Department of Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University is an accredited undergraduate and graduate architecture degree programs. In the Department of Architecture, we believe that the study of architecture involves questioning assumptions, reflecting on history, and rethinking the future so as to meaningfully contribute to the creation of just and equitable societies. That’s why we are committed to the design studio as a space in which conceptual, practical, and theoretical thinking is integrated with the everyday, the material, the technological, and the humane.

Our students graduate with the foundation needed to design buildings for private, public, and institutional use, and the ability to leave an impact on the environment as a licensed architect.

In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture offered by institutions with U.S. regional accreditation, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an eight-year term, an eight-year term with conditions, or a two-year term of continuing accreditation, or a three-year term of initial accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established education standards. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

Iowa State University Department of Architecture offers the following NAAB-accredited degree programs:

• Bachelor of Architecture (165 credits)

• Master of Architecture (undergraduate degree with non-architecture major + 90 credits)

• Master of Architecture – advanced standing (undergraduate degree with architecture major + 60 credits)
