Senior or Principal Transportation Planner

POSITION SUMMARY

The Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and experienced professional to become our newest Senior or Principal Transportation Planner. This position is responsible for a variety of planning activities within the Transportation Planning Department and reports to the Director of Transportation Planning or the Deputy Director of Transportation Planning.  

Note: This position is advertised at Grade 4 or Grade 5, depending on the applicant's qualifications, and the salary range reflects both grades. 

CRCOG has posted three concurrent positions in its Transportation Planning Department. Depending on the strength of the applicant pool, CRCOG intends to hire two of the three.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide transportation planning, research, and policy analysis for the CRCOG region;
• Support or oversee numerous CRCOG planning studies, including the RFQ process, consultant selection, contracting, and invoicing;
• Working with other staff to help the Agency and municipalities complete transportation projects and initiatives;
• Assist in organizing Transportation Committee meetings and activities;
• Assign and oversee tasks for one or more transportation planning staff members (Principal level)
• Coordinate efforts associated with advancing non-infrastructure recommendations from CRCOG transportation safety plans. Tasks may include:
  • Organizing safety-focused CRCOG Transportation Subcommittee meetings and CRCOG Traffic Incident Management outreach;
  • Coordinating with Watch for Me CT and UConn's T2 Center on pedestrian/road safety campaigns;
  • Implementing strategies to engage CRCOG municipalities and community members in roadway safety campaigns and Vision Zero initiatives;
  • Fostering community partners, including municipal governments, schools, state agencies, local police, and advocacy organizations; developing safety education and marketing materials as needed; and presenting safety education items to CRCOG Committees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Urban/Regional Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, Civil Engineering, or related field. A Master's degree is preferred. An equivalent combination of training and work experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform required duties will be considered.

Senior Level (Grade 4): A minimum of three years of increasingly responsible experience.

Principal Level (Grade 5): A minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible experience. AICP certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

Knowledge of:

• Transportation planning principles and practices.;
• Federal transportation planning regulations and CTDOT policies;
• Government operations; and project management.

Ability to:

• Speak in public, providing information and answering questions
• Prioritize work assignments across multiple concurrent projects and remain effective under pressure of variable deadlines.
• Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with CRCOG management and staff, committee members, municipal officials, consultants, and members of the public.

Skills:

• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Proficiency with word-processing and spreadsheets and other software.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Grade 4 (Senior Planner) Salary Range: $71,123 – $92,460

Grade 5 (Principal Planner) Salary range: $83,570 – $108,640
