Position Overview:
Seattle’s Department of Transportation (SDOT) is seeking a seasoned transportation planner to fill a full-time Senior Transportation Planner position within the Policy & Planning Division. This position offers the opportunity to shape the city’s long-range transportation vision through high-impact projects such as Station Area Plans around light rail hubs, district plans for Regional Centers, and citywide policy initiatives aligned with the Seattle Transportation Plan. The ideal candidate will bring broad expertise in urban and transportation planning, a commitment to equity, sustainability, and safety, and a proven ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder efforts. Responsibilities include driving strategic planning and policy innovation, coordinating across city departments and external partners, conducting technical and policy analysis, and designing inclusive public engagement strategies. Reporting directly to the Transportation Planning Manager, this role offers executive visibility and the chance to leave a lasting legacy on Seattle’s mobility future.
Lead or participate in technically complex, difficult, and sensitive interdisciplinary transportation planning studies that have a land use component. These efforts have uncertainty and ambiguity, which require creative problem-solving skills.
Develop and track project budgets, scopes, and schedules; manage consultant teams; work with agency partners; manage risks; and develop and implement public engagement plans.
Lead public engagement efforts, which could include focus groups, walking tours, pop-up tabling events, farmers’ markets, etc. Speak about planning projects confidently with a wide variety of community members.
Serve as lead author for an array of deliverables, including plans, reports, community surveys, and project websites. This will require strong, concise writing that is appropriate for a lay audience.
Analyze transportation systems and policies; identify transportation challenges that exist in the study area and potential solutions, including evaluation of alternatives; recommend policies and transportation project ideas; prepare reports of findings; and ensure implementation of proposed solutions.
Coordinate with SDOT subject matter experts and other governmental agencies on our transportation policies and plans; organize and serve on multi-agency technical review committees; serve as an interagency coordinator and representative for SDOT.
Brief and deliver presentations to the public, management staff, and elected officials; provide information for various public information materials.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of the class).
Experience: Requires a minimum of three years of transportation planning or development experience.
OR: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of the class.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:
Experience serving as a project manager on transportation planning projects, at either a citywide or subarea/neighborhood scale. This could include comprehensive transportation plans, corridor, subarea, or neighborhood access plans, and ideally, the plans would integrate transportation and land use.
Experience designing, organizing, and leading public engagement plans and activities, with a focus on reaching community members who do not typically engage in planning processes.
Strong writer capable of producing written materials for a lay audience.
Experience managing consultant contracts, which includes reviewing invoices, leading check-in calls, reviewing deliverables, and providing feedback.
Organized, proactive, and detail-oriented.
Ability to plan for multi-modal streets and networks, including experience planning for people walking, bicycling, and taking transit, experience planning for freight and urban goods delivery, and/or emerging mobility options.
Ability to multitask and manage priorities in a dynamic work environment.
Good judgment and demonstrated ability to handle sensitive issues with diplomacy and poise, and the ability to gain management confidence.
Expertise with the Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS or the Adobe Creative Suite.
Graduate degree in a relevant subject area.
Other Requirements:
Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
This job also involves meeting with community members on-site and online, and conducting site visits throughout the City.
Site visits may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and construction sites.
May be to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
Licenses:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

The full salary range for this position is $58.45- $67.95 per hour.
