Job Description

We are looking to hire a Transportation Planner 1 (TP1) to join our Support Section within the Location and Environment Bureau (LEB) with the Iowa Department of Transportation. This position will join an innovative team that consists of geographic information systems (GIS) and computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) experts who assist the bureau with transportation project planning and delivery.


This position is part of the Transportation Planner classification series. Candidates hired at the Transportation Planner 1 level may be eligible for non-competitive reclassification to Transportation Planner 2 after meeting Department of Administrative Services (DAS) minimum qualifications and demonstrating the competencies needed to perform journey-level planning work.


Location:   Ames – 50010 – Story County


Schedule and travel requirements:  40 hours, M-F, with flexible schedule options and telework available.  Some travel may be required.


Desired Abilities:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Working technical knowledge and experience with Bentley OpenRoads
  • Working knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcPro
  • Working knowledge and experience with data management and associated software, such as FME
  • Experience with preparing and processing drone and LIDAR data files
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people 
  • Displays high standards of ethical conduct 
  • Commitment to providing a high-quality product and service. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Provide bureau-wide production support by helping to provide solutions to issues related to hardware, software, procedures, and other planning and technology-related tools
  • Utilize GIS and CADD software to develop and share data between platforms and provide preferred deliverables to customers 
  • Develop and maintain technical documents and training materials for automation processes
  • Research new and existing technologies to help develop solutions to problems encountered during the transportation planning and resource impact analysis processes
  • Ensure hardware and software needs are being met and resources are available for bureau staff to use
  • Investigates and recommends improvements to established data workflows and processes using various programming methods


Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
 
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field.

2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time work experience in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering or science finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, archaeology, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation (technology, management, or flight operations), or transportation planning equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field.
