The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking a Transportation Planner to provide support for the administration of roadway project recommendations in the Metropolitan Transportation Plan. This highly detail-oriented role requires maintaining consistency across evolving projects and ensuring alignment with partner input and key planning documents, such as the Metropolitan Transportation Plan and the Transportation Improvement Program, as well as needs assessments and feasibility studies. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the administration of significant roadway project recommendations for the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) region’s long-range transportation plan
  • Assisting with data entry, quality control, and verification of project information
  • Monitoring project development to ensure project data is current
  • Working with supervisor to ensure project consistency between the Metropolitan Transportation Plan, Transportation Improvement Program, Roadway Corridor and Subarea Studies, and partner agencies
  • Working with supervisor to develop and maintain roadway recommendation tables, maps, and project summary fact sheets
  • Assisting with the planning of and attending meetings with internal and external partners to gather and clarify project details and status
  • Working with supervisor to develop maps, charts, and other visual materials to communicate roadway recommendations and analyses
  • Assisting supervisor with the review of modeled roadway networks to ensure accuracy and consistency with planned improvements
  • Working with supervisor on roadway demand planning and analysis efforts, such as creating simulations, analyzing outputs, and creating reports and maps
  • Drafting presentations for supervisor review, with the opportunity to deliver presentations to staff and committee members
  • Drafting for supervisor review correspondence, technical reports, and other documents

Required Skills

  • Good communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with team members, and present ideas
  • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Detailed oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Familiarity with Python, SQL, or similar programming languages desired
  • Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with the ability to create maps desired

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in analytical, quantitative methods
  • One year or less of work-related experience

Starting Salary Range

Minimum of $47,618.00 - $57,141.60 annually

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. Since 1974, NCTCOG has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise. NCTCOG also serves as a designated recipient for Federal Transit Administration funds.
