Urban Planner
As an Urban Planner, you will play a key role in supporting high‑quality land use and development outcomes across Boroondara.
This 6-month position is required to cover temporary absences within the department.
About the role
This role is part of a progressive organisation that places customers and community at the centre of its work. You will assess planning and subdivision applications, provide thoughtful planning advice, and help guide development that is sustainable, site‑responsive and aligned with policy objectives. You will also represent Council at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal when required.
About you
You bring a sound understanding of the Planning and Environment Act, planning schemes and related legislation, along with experience applying land use concepts in a statutory planning context. You are a strong communicator who can prepare clear reports, explain complex planning matters, and engage respectfully with a wide range of stakeholders. You manage competing priorities effectively, approach negotiations with professionalism and diplomacy, and demonstrate well‑developed problem‑solving and analytical skills.
Two or more years of planning experience within a Victorian metropolitan Council is preferred. A relevant degree and eligibility for industry association membership are desirable.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will assess planning applications and amendments, prepare high‑quality reports and correspondence, and provide accurate and timely planning advice to internal and external stakeholders. You will facilitate consultative meetings to resolve issues through mediation and negotiation, and advocate for land use and development outcomes that reflect policy intent and deliver positive amenity.
You will prepare and present Council’s position at VCAT, maintain clear and accurate records in line with corporate requirements, contribute to continuous improvement within the Urban Planning Department, and support Council’s commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
