Construction Manager- (Civil)

A Civil Engineer (Substation) works on the civil construction of electrical substations such as foundations, control buildings, cable trenches, equipment structures, and drainage systems. The role ensures all civil works support the electrical equipment safely and according to standards.

1. Site Preparation and Layout

• Review civil drawings, electrical layouts, and specifications for the substation project.

• Coordinate with surveyors for site setting out and levels.

• Ensure proper site grading and earthworks before construction.

• Mark locations for:

  • Transformer foundations

  • Gantry structures

  • Equipment pedestals

  • Control building

2. Foundation and Structural Works

• Supervise construction of reinforced concrete foundations for:

  • Power transformers

  • Circuit breakers

  • Lightning masts

  • Gantry structures

  • Cable support structures

• Ensure proper reinforcement placement, formwork, and concrete pouring.

• Check anchor bolts alignment and positioning for electrical equipment.

3. Control Building Construction

• Supervise construction of the substation control room building, including:

  • Foundations

  • Structural concrete works

  • Block/brick walls

  • Roof slab

  • Finishing works

• Ensure spaces for switchgear rooms, relay rooms, and battery rooms are constructed as per drawings.

4. Cable Trenches and Duct Banks

• Oversee construction of:

  • Cable trenches

  • Underground cable ducts

  • Manholes and handholes

• Ensure correct dimensions, slope, and drainage to prevent water accumulation.

5. Oil Containment and Drainage

• Supervise construction of transformer oil pits and oil containment systems.

• Ensure drainage systems and oil-water separators are built according to environmental standards.

6. Road and Yard Development

• Manage construction of:

  • Internal access roads

  • Gravel or crushed stone yard

  • Equipment foundations area

• Ensure proper compaction and grading of the yard.

7. Quality Control and Inspection

• Ensure all civil works follow project specifications and standards.

• Check levels, alignment, and dimensions before and after construction.

• Coordinate material testing such as:

  • Concrete cube tests

  • Soil compaction tests

8. Coordination with Electrical Team

• Work closely with electrical engineers and installation teams.

• Ensure civil structures are ready before equipment installation.

• Provide support during equipment erection and cable installation.

9. Safety and Compliance

• Ensure site activities follow construction safety standards.

• Monitor excavation safety and heavy equipment operations.

• Implement PPE and safe work practices.

10. Documentation and Reporting

• Prepare daily progress reports.

• Maintain records of:

  • Concrete pours

  • Material deliveries

  • Inspection reports

• Assist in quantity measurement and billing.
