Introduction

The Construction Manager takes accountability for construction planning, execution, control and assurance across the organisation project/s, serving as the organisation's owner-team representative to ensure that construction is delivered safely, to the approved scope, quality, schedule and cost.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead construction execution and coordinate contractors, owner-team functions and operational interfaces in accordance with the approved execution strategy
  • Develop and maintain the Construction Management Plan, site establishment plan, contracting strategy inputs and integrated construction schedule
  • Establish construction quality, inspection, test, completion and handover requirements from mobilisation through commissioning
  • Monitor physical progress, productivity, schedule and cost performance, reporting variances, root causes and recovery actions
  • Identify and manage construction, interface, safety, environmental, community and regulatory risks
  • Manage construction contractors, ensuring contract compliance, safe performance, quality and on-time delivery

Safety, Health, and Environment 

  • Ensure all construction activities comply with organisation safety, health and environmental requirements and applicable legislation

SHE policies and procedures 

  • Review construction work packs, method statements, lift plans, temporary works, inspection and test plans, and readiness for execution
  • Verify construction readiness, including issued-for-construction information, materials, access, permits, resources and interface clearances

Performance and Delivery 

Construction Planning, Execution and Quality Assurance 

  •  Review construction work packs, method statements, lift plans, temporary works, inspection and test plans, and readiness for execution

Scope and Change Management 

  • Actively monitor contractor scope and field conditions to prevent unauthorised scope growth and rework
  • Support development and validation of the construction WBS, work packages and control accounts

Contractor and Site Management 

  • Support contractor prequalification, tender evaluation, mobilisation and administration of construction contracts
  • Track contractor progress, productivity, resources, quality and compliance with the approved schedule and budget

Integration and Coordination 

  • Ensure seamless integration between contractors and the owner’s team, including engineering, project controls, operations readiness, environmental, procurement and commercial functions
  • Facilitate timely exchange of construction information, decisions and constraints between the owner and contractors

Risk Management and Reporting 

  • Identify construction risks associated with work methods, interfaces, temporary works, logistics, site conditions and contractor performance
  • Implement mitigation actions and escalate significant construction risks to the Project Manager

Regulatory Compliance 

  • Ensure construction activities, contractors and site controls comply with South African mining legislation, environmental requirements, approved permits and project commitments
  • Maintain awareness of applicable regulatory requirements and ensure ongoing site compliance

Stakeholder Engagement & Support 

  • Maintain appropriate stakeholder relationships, enhancing the corporate profile and fostering collaboration
  • Provide relevant construction information and support to stakeholders, ensuring interfaces and commitments are managed effectively

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Construction Management, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant construction experience on mining or heavy industrial projects, including significant site leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary contractors through construction, completion and handover.

Knowledge

  • Mining and heavy industrial construction environment, including open-pit mining infrastructure, civil works, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation packages
