We have an exciting opportunity for an experience Rail Construction Manager to join our team in Milton Keynes supporting one of our key clients. This is a full-time opportunity with travel expected ad-hoc around the Southern region.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Monitoring site activities to ensure compliance with all relevant rules, regulations, Railway Group and Network Rail company standards, as well as applicable procedures and legislation.
  • Reviewing in conjunction with the Asset Protection Engineer, the contractor’s method statements and site-specific risk assessments.
  • Monitoring through liaison with appropriate Network Rail personnel, that arrangements for access, possessions, storage, worksites, and related logistics are in place to support the efficient delivery of the works.
  • Undertaking a programme of regular, pre-arranged inspections to assess the quality of the contractor’s work. Instruct contractors in line with delegated authority and ensure that any remedial actions are tracked through to closure, with non-conformance reports resolved in an auditable manner. Direct changes where appropriate.
  • Inspecting completed works and assess readiness for formal inspection, ensuring outcomes are recorded and any required remedial works are identified and controlled.
  • Liaising closely with the contractor to ensure that “first off” examples of elements of the works are jointly inspected at the earliest opportunity, agreeing detailed workmanship standards for consistent application across the project.
  • Monitoring the contractor’s management of site operations through regular site meetings, establishing details of work locations, scope, and staffing levels for each element of the works until the subsequent meeting.
  • Tracking progress through regular site visits and inspections, comparing work in progress against contract documentation, updates provided at site meetings, and the overarching programme.
  • Maintaining a consistent on-site presence across all worksites, continuously monitoring and, where necessary, correcting methods and standards of work. Remain vigilant for any shortcomings and maintain a site diary as required.
  • Promoting awareness of HSQE requirements and high standards of workmanship through regular communication with contractor site teams.
  • Assessing and monitoring the competence of contractor personnel before and throughout all phases of work.
  • Ensuring contractors comply with Network Rail policies relating to accident and incident reporting and investigation and provide support in conducting investigations where required.
  • Managing a team of Assistant Construction Managers and Construction Management Assistants, coordinating the work bank for the designated area.
  • Providing functional support to other members of the team as directed.

You’ll need to have:

  • Working towards membership of MCIOB/MAPM/MRICS/MICE or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.  
  • Experience in the successful delivery phase of projects and programmes in the Rail sector. 
  • Construction management expertise.  
  • Developing commercial and financial acumen.  
  • Experience leading parts of construction projects within large, diverse teams.  
  • Experience of building relationships with key stakeholders.  
  • Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on
