Construction Manager - Substation, BESS & Transmission Lines

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Construction Manager to lead the delivery of a major renewable energy infrastructure project in the Fraser Coast region. This role will oversee the full construction scope across a 275kV substation, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and high-voltage transmission line, ensuring safe, high-quality, and on-time delivery.
This is a key leadership position responsible for managing complex, multi-disciplinary construction activities from site mobilization through to energization and project handover.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Execution

• Lead construction across substation, BESS, and 275kV transmission line scopes
• Manage civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and SCADA works
• Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, plant, cranes, and logistics
• Oversee construction sequencing, interfaces, and programme delivery
• Ensure works are delivered in line with IFC drawings, specifications, and contract requirements

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Drive a strong safety culture with zero harm focus
• Ensure compliance with HSEQ systems, permits, and legislation
• Conduct site inspections, toolbox talks, and audits
• Manage QA/QC processes, ITPs, inspections, and testing documentation
• Oversee defect identification and close-out

Programme & Commercial Management

• Monitor progress against programme and key milestones
• Identify risks, delay, and implement mitigation strategies
• Support reporting, forecasting, and variation management
• Coordinate procurement and site delivery activities

Commissioning & Energization

• Manage handover to commissioning teams
• Support testing, pre-commissioning, and energization activities
• Coordinate outages, switching, and HV interfaces
• Ensure readiness for staged energization and commercial operation

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

• Lead site engineers, supervisors, and subcontractors
• Facilitate coordination meetings and planning sessions
• Build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders
• Provide mentoring and maintain team performance

About You

Essential Experience

• Proven experience delivering 275kV (or similar) HV substation projects
• Strong background in renewable energy, utilities, or transmission infrastructure
• Demonstrated delivery of greenfield substation projects through to energization
• Experience managing BESS construction, including installation, cabling, and commissioning interfaces
• Extensive experience in overhead transmission line construction (foundations, pole erection, stringing)
• Strong understanding of construction sequencing, critical path, and project controls

Qualifications & Licenses

• Construction White Card
• Valid Driver’s License
• High Risk Work License (Rigging/Dogging highly regarded)
• Relevant engineering, construction, or project management qualification (preferred)

Technical Capability

• Strong knowledge of:
  • HV primary and secondary systems
  • Civil and structural works
  • Earthing, trenching, and cable installation
  • SCADA and communications
  • Testing, commissioning, and handover processes

Desirable

• Experience with Powerlink or similar network operators
• Solar farm or hybrid renewable project experience
• Electrical license (QLD or transferable)
• Familiarity with tools such as MS Project, Primavera P6, Procore, Hammertech
