About the Role

ITM Katope is recruiting for its client for an experienced Construction Manager to lead construction activities on a major mining growth project based in Postmasburg, Northern Cape.

The Construction Manager will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, coordination and control of construction activities throughout the project lifecycle, from mobilisation and site establishment through construction, commissioning support and final handover.

The successful candidate will act as the key construction representative on site, ensuring that construction activities are delivered safely, within approved scope, to the required quality standards, according to schedule and within budget.

The role requires strong leadership, technical knowledge, contractor management experience and the ability to work effectively in a complex mining or heavy industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety, Health and Environment

  • Ensure all construction activities comply with applicable SHE requirements and South African legislation.
  • Stop and escalate unsafe work, critical risks and significant non-compliance.
  • Maintain high standards of site housekeeping, access control and work-area management.
  • Lead and participate in safety inspections, risk assessments and critical-control verification.
  • Ensure contractors and subcontractors comply with approved safety procedures, method statements and permit-to-work requirements.
  • Ensure safety actions and identified risks are followed up and closed out within the required timeframes.

2. Construction Planning and Execution

  • Lead construction execution in line with the approved project execution strategy.
  • Develop and maintain the Construction Management Plan.
  • Support site establishment planning and construction mobilisation.
  • Develop and maintain the integrated construction schedule.
  • Review construction work packs, method statements, lifting plans, temporary works and inspection and test plans.
  • Verify construction readiness, including drawings, materials, access, permits, resources and interfaces.
  • Ensure construction activities are executed according to approved designs, specifications and project requirements.
  • Lead constructability reviews and identify practical and cost-effective construction solutions.
  • Coordinate construction activities across multiple disciplines and work packages.

3. Construction Quality and Assurance

  • Implement and maintain the project Construction Quality Plan.
  • Ensure all construction work meets approved quality standards and specifications.
  • Monitor inspection and testing requirements throughout construction.
  • Ensure construction activities comply with approved designs and technical requirements.
  • Monitor quality issues, non-conformances and corrective actions.
  • Ensure accurate quality records, inspection records and completion documentation are maintained.
  • Support commissioning, completion and handover activities.

4. Contractor and Site Management

  • Support contractor prequalification, tender evaluation, mobilisation and contract administration.
  • Manage and monitor construction contractors and subcontractors.
  • Track contractor progress, productivity, resources, quality and compliance.
  • Ensure contractors deliver according to approved schedules and budgets.
  • Address contractor underperformance and deviations promptly.
  • Act as the main site interface between the project team and construction contractors.
  • Communicate project requirements, priorities, constraints and expectations clearly to contractors.
  • Validate contractor progress claims, measured quantities and payment recommendations.
  • Support contract administration and claims prevention.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable construction records.

5. Scope and Change Management

  • Monitor contractor scope and site conditions to prevent unauthorised work and unnecessary rework.
  • Support the development and validation of the construction Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
  • Ensure alignment between scope, schedule, quantities, progress measurement and cost reporting.
  • Maintain proper control of field changes.
  • Review construction change requests and assess their impact on:
    • Safety
    • Scope
    • Quality
    • Cost
    • Schedule
  • Identify construction variances and determine root causes.
  • Develop corrective actions and schedule recovery plans where required.

6. Project Coordination and Integration

  • Coordinate construction activities between contractors and the project team.
  • Work closely with engineering, project controls, procurement, commercial, environmental and operational teams.
  • Ensure construction information, decisions and constraints are communicated effectively.
  • Coordinate materials, vendor information, logistics and construction requirements.
  • Work closely with Project Controls to monitor critical-path activities, productivity, forecasts and recovery plans.
  • Establish effective progress measurement and quantity tracking systems.
  • Communicate construction priorities, risks, constraints and decisions to key stakeholders.

7. Risk Management and Reporting

  • Identify construction risks relating to:
    • Construction methods
    • Site conditions
    • Temporary works
    • Logistics
    • Contractor performance
    • Project interfaces
    • Safety and environmental conditions
  • Implement appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Escalate significant risks to the Project Manager.
  • Monitor site and external conditions that may affect project delivery.
  • Prepare and present regular construction reports covering:
    • Safety
    • Progress
    • Productivity
    • Quality
    • Cost
    • Schedule
    • Risks
    • Required decisions
  • Provide construction support to engineering, commissioning and operational-readiness teams.
  • Conduct construction evaluations and execution-readiness assessments when required.

8. Regulatory and Legal Compliance

  • Ensure construction activities comply with applicable South African mining, construction, occupational health and safety and environmental legislation.
  • Ensure required permits and regulatory requirements are maintained.
  • Support implementation of environmental and social commitments during construction.
  • Enforce legal, contractual and corporate governance requirements across construction activities.
  • Ensure teams and contractors comply with relevant policies and procedures.

9. Cost and Commercial Management

  • Support construction cost control through accurate quantity verification and productivity monitoring.
  • Monitor construction performance against approved budgets.
  • Support forecasting and identification of potential cost risks.
  • Assist with change management and commercial risk management.
  • Work with the Commercial and Project Controls teams to identify and manage construction-related commercial risks.

10. Stakeholder Management

  • Maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build effective relationships with contractors, consultants, engineering teams, operations, regulatory authorities, suppliers and community stakeholders.
  • Ensure project interfaces and stakeholder commitments are properly managed.
  • Provide accurate and timely construction information to stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager and other senior project stakeholders to manage construction risks and achieve project objectives.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or National Diploma in:
    • Construction Management
    • Civil Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mining Engineering
    • Or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant construction experience.
  • Significant site leadership experience in mining or heavy industrial projects.
  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary contractors throughout construction, completion and handover.

Certifications

  • Valid South African driver's licence.
  • Valid medical fitness certificate for mine/construction-site access.
  • Relevant legal appointment or competency certification where required.

Advantageous Qualifications and Experience

The following will be advantageous:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Construction Management or Project Management.
  • Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP or an equivalent recognised body.
  • Previous owner-team construction management experience.
  • Experience in:
