ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a Senior Healthcare Interior Designer (SME) to support Facilities Management Services (FMS) at the El Paso VA Health Care System (EPVAHCS). This is a full-time embedded federal contract role within the VA's Capital Improvement Team, working alongside a Lead Interior Designer SME and a multidisciplinary engineering team.
The Interior Designer SME handles multiple, complex, and frequently urgent design projects across EPVAHCS facilities, including the major Replacement Healthcare Center (HCC). You will work as a technical expert with independent responsibility for interior design deliverables under the general supervision of the Supervisory Healthcare Engineer, coordinating closely with engineers, architects, and clinical end users.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Execute comprehensive interior design services from concept through installation for EPVAHCS clinical, administrative, and support spaces
- Produce Room Data Sheets (RDS), room finish schedules, door/hardware schedules, and interior layouts reconciled to VA-SEPS (PG-18-9) outputs
- Specify and document finishes for all healthcare environment types with attention to infection prevention, disinfectant compatibility, cleanability, and sustainability
- Develop signage and wayfinding packages per VA Signage Design Manual (PG-18-10), integrating life-safety and patient-friendly directional signage
- Apply VA PG-18-13 Barrier-Free Design Standard (ADA/ABA/ABAAS) to all design work including accessible routes, clearances, and SCI/D considerations
- Coordinate FF&E selections aligned with VA SEPS/PG-18-5, ensuring infection prevention compatibility, durability, and clinical workflow support
- Verify compliance of interior assemblies with VA PG-18-14, Room Finishes, Door & Hardware Schedule, and FGI Guidelines (2022)
- Support transition/activation activities including temporary wayfinding, move coordination, and staff training materials
- Assist COR with furnishings, cubicle curtains, wall/floor coverings, lighting, and casework procurement from origination through installation
- Produce O&M turnover documentation, cleaning/disinfection guides, and owner SOPs consistent with VA deliverable expectations
- Coordinate paint, flooring, and ceiling/lighting schedules with construction crews
- Advise on adequacy and adaptability of space including furniture layout, code compliance, and operational fit
- Maintain project files, drawings, specifications, budgets, and material resource library
- Participate in activation of construction projects ranging from administrative areas to complex clinical spaces
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 7–10+ years of healthcare interior design experience
- VA/VHA interior design experience strongly preferred
- Working mastery of VA TIL interior design standards:
- PG-18-10: Interior Design Manual and Signage & Wayfinding
- PG-18-14: Room Finishes, Door & Hardware Schedule
- PG-18-9: VA SEPS Space Planning Criteria
- PG-18-1: Master Construction Specifications
- PG-18-13: VA Barrier-Free Design Standard
- NCIDQ certification preferred
- CHID (Certified Healthcare Interior Designer) and/or EDAC certification a plus
- Knowledge of infection prevention requirements for surface materials and healthcare disinfectants
- Familiarity with FGI Guidelines for Design & Construction (2022)
- Understanding of NFPA 101/99 life safety context as it affects interior environments, signage, and egress
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with VA IOT&A (Initial Outfitting, Transition, and Activation) processes
- Experience specifying finishes for pharmacy cleanrooms, sterile processing, and behavioral health spaces
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software
- Experience supporting multi-building federal or healthcare campus design programs
- Familiarity with BIM coordination and FM data integration
SECURITY / BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to pass a federal background investigation (NACI)
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card
- Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States
