Structural Steel Construction Manager - Healthcare Construction - Base Salary to 180k/year - Birmingham, AL

  • Our client is a leading manufacturer and builder of high-performance modular healthcare facilities serving major healthcare systems nationwide. They are seeking a Structural Steel Construction Manager to lead structural steel and miscellaneous metals self-perform operations across large-scale construction projects throughout the United States.
  • This role will oversee estimating, preconstruction, steel erection planning, workforce management, field execution, safety compliance, scheduling coordination, and financial performance for structural steel operations supporting healthcare and complex commercial construction projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all structural steel and miscellaneous metals self-perform construction operations across multiple active projects
  • Oversee structural steel erection, welding, fabrication coordination, rigging operations, crane activities, decking installation, stairs, rails, and miscellaneous metals scopes
  • Prepare estimates, quantity takeoffs, budgets, labor forecasts, and procurement plans for steel construction activities
  • Manage bidding, leveling, and award processes for subcontractors, fabrication partners, crane providers, rigging support, and steel erection services
  • Coordinate material procurement, fabrication schedules, and material releases to support project timelines
  • Collaborate with engineering, detailing, fabrication, manufacturing, VDC, and construction teams throughout project execution
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, fabrication drawings, erection plans, specifications, and structural steel documents
  • Perform constructability reviews and support preconstruction planning activities for structural steel scopes
  • Coordinate steel erection sequencing, crane planning, rigging operations, and installation activities across multiple projects
  • Manage tie-ins and modifications to existing structures when required
  • Oversee manpower forecasting, workforce planning, labor allocation, and crew utilization across backlog and active projects
  • Provide sequencing feedback and installation durations to support master project schedules
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, fabrication coordination, field issue resolution, and project documentation
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, AWS welding standards, crane safety requirements, and company safety procedures
  • Lead safety initiatives and promote a strong safety culture across all project sites
  • Mentor, train, and develop field personnel, foremen, and trade leaders
  • Monitor labor productivity, equipment utilization, project profitability, per diem management, and operational performance
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to structural steel construction operations
  • Travel regularly to active project sites throughout the Southeast and broader United States

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of construction experience with strong expertise in structural steel erection, welding, fabrication, rigging, crane operations, and steel installation
  • Experience managing self-perform construction operations and direct labor forces
  • Experience leading structural steel construction projects in commercial, industrial, healthcare, mission critical, manufacturing, or large-scale construction environments
  • Strong estimating, quantity takeoff, budgeting, cost control, and project financial management experience
  • Experience performing constructability reviews and supporting preconstruction activities
  • Experience coordinating structural steel fabrication, detailing, erection sequencing, and field execution
  • Knowledge of AWS welding standards, OSHA regulations, crane safety requirements, and steel erection best practices
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, erection plans, and construction documents
  • Experience using Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), and Microsoft Office
  • Experience using Procore
  • Ability to manage multiple active construction projects and shifting priorities
  • Ability to travel regularly to active project sites throughout the Southeast United States
  • Strong commitment to safety, workforce development, and operational performance

Compensation:

  • Base salary in the 150k – 180k/year range
