Minimum Qualifications:

Education for a Transportation Planner II/III/IV: Bachelor's Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Business Admin or related field.

Experience:

Transportation Planner II: 2 years Planning or Research analysis (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)

Transportation Planner III: 3 years Planning or Research analysis (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)

Transportation Planner IV: 4 years Planning or Research analysis (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)

-Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis OR related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Researching, analyzing and interpreting policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work\: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

Transportation Planner II
Performs planning and programming activities in support of management-related programs and/or transportation projects. Work requires contact with departmental managers, high-level executives, governmental/university officials and/or private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Planner III:
Performs complex planning and programming activities in support of management-related programs and/or transportation projects. Work requires contact with departmental managers, high-level executives, governmental/university officials and/or private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transportation Planner IV:
Performs complex planning and programming activities in support of management-related programs and/or transportation projects. Work requires contact with departmental managers, high-level executives, governmental/university officials and/or private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Planner II

  • Performs analysis of data and preparation of reports to identify capital improvement needs for state and federal funding.
  • Assists in reviewing and preparing correspondence, reports, studies, giving briefings and making presentations regarding program activities.
  • Assists with budget preparation; monitors and estimates future costs.
  • Monitors and analyzes activities of assigned functional areas and provide information that may impact them.
  • Performs planning and programming activities in support of management-related programs and/or transportation projects.
  • Reviews and evaluates plans and related documents to ensure compliance with applicable state or federal requirements and conformance to acceptable professional standards.
  • Reviews, evaluates and responds to requests from sponsors for state and federal improvement funds.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a Transportation Planner III include:

  • Performs complex planning and programming activities in support of management-related programs and/or transportation projects.
  • Reviews and prepares correspondence, reports, studies, give briefings and makes presentations regarding program activities.
  • Conducts research and analysis on complex issues, legislation, departmental policies and assists in developing departmental policy positions pertinent to those issues and areas of expertise.
  • Reviews and prepares correspondence, reports, studies, gives briefings and makes presentations regarding program activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a Transportation Planner IV include:

  • Coordinates analysis activities and monitors state and federal transportation related issues potentially having a broad impact on departmental activities and develops or oversees development of assessment reports.
