Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Transportation Planner involves organizing and coordinating transportation services for all company shipments and associated logistical processes.  This role requires expertise in shipment, load, and transportation planning procedures, as well as familiarity with DOT regulations, freight tendering, and spot rate negotiations across all modes of transportation.

 

Essential Duties

  • Carries out various tasks associated with transportation processes for truckload, LTL, and parcel shipping. 
  • Examines daily orders, routes, and freight expenses to strategize the most effective transportation method and service level. 
  • Organizes orders considering shipment details like shipping dates, backorder status, weight, cube size, and location.  Secures capacity, negotiates spot rates as needed, and plans warehouse pick operations. 
  • Acts as a bridge between the Logistics and Customer Service departments to ensure top-tier customer service.  
  • Assists in maintaining freight contracts, tariffs, rates, and other charges agreed upon by the company. 
  • Maintains DOT files and ensures compliance with federal and state record-keeping regulations.
  • Offers coverage for the department when team members are absent.  
  • Prepares regular and special metric performance reports for management.
  • Develops proficiency in JD Edwards Freight Routes/Rates ERP software.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Educational Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a transportation planning function utilizing a TMS system
  • Intermediate experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in preparing data analysis and software generated reports to offer fresh insights for enhancing processes
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to change
  • Experience working in a fast paced and high-volume work environment
  • Proactive “self-starter” with a strong attention to detail
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling effective interaction with employees on all levels, including executive leadership, as well as carriers and customers

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Knowledge of JDE, WMS, and ERP software or similar applications

Consistent interaction with various levels of production and distribution employees and management, depending on the facility.  May interact with third party drivers or distribution channel personnel.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work Environment

This position works in a general distribution or manufacturing environment.  Frequently exposed to seasonal temperatures of excessive cold or heat.  Work environment is often loud, dusty and/or dirty due to the materials required for production.
