Introduction

The Construction Manager will be responsible for leading and managing all on-site construction activities for a utility-scale Solar PV project. The role ensures that the project is delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. In addition to solar PV, experience in wind energy projects and electrical grid connection works will be advantageous.

 

 

Working Conditions

  • Permanent site-based role with extended periods on construction sites.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote locations within South Africa.
  • Ability to work extended hours as required to meet project deadlines.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Execution & Site Management

  • Lead, coordinate, and manage all construction activities on site from mobilization through to commissioning and handover.
  • Ensure strict adherence to project specifications, drawings, and technical requirements.
  • Develop and implement construction execution plans, schedules, and methodologies.
  • Manage the site to achieve completion in line with the approved project programme and contractual timelines.
  • Monitor progress against the construction programme (Gantt chart) and implement corrective actions where required to mitigate delays.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)

  • Enforce compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards and regulations.
  • Promote and ensure all the quality management facilitates and enforces all quality documentation delivery by all staff, subcontractors, consultants and suppliers
  • Promote a strong safety culture on site and ensure zero harm objectives are achieved.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure all works are executed in accordance with approved quality management systems and ITPs.

Contractor & Stakeholder Management

  • Manage subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers to ensure performance aligns with contractual obligations.
  • Ensure all parties comply with scope, programme, and contractual requirements.
  • Coordinate interfaces between civil, mechanical, electrical, and grid connection works.
  • Liaise with the and local communities representatives and authorities as required.
  • Liaise with the Project Manager to ensure all information requirements are delivered and any contractual matters or claims are complete and accurate.
  • Ensure accurate and detailed records are kept on site for all activities, labour, progress and the like for reporting purposes.

 

Logistics & Resource Management

  • Oversee site logistics including material deliveries, storage, and handling.
  • Ensure optimal allocation and utilization of labour, plant, and equipment.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to supply chain and site constraints.
  • Maintain detailed records of materials on site and ensure traceability of installed equipment in the field.

Commercial & Reporting

  • Provide input into cost control, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
  • Identify and provide input to manage variations, claims, and site-related commercial risks.
  • Prepare and submit monthly progress reports to the head of Construction Services, including updates on schedule, cost, HSE, risks, and key milestones.

Commissioning & Handover

  • Support and coordinate pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all punch list items are completed and documentation is finalized.
  • Facilitate successful project handover to the client and operations team.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • SACPCMP registration
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in construction management within large-scale infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
  • Proven experience in utility-scale Solar PV projects (EPC environment preferred).
  • Solid understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing, and project controls.
  • Strong knowledge of South African construction regulations and HSE requirements.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Experience in wind energy projects and/or electrical grid connection (substations, transmission lines).
  • Familiarity with EPC contract structures and execution.
  • Solid understanding of Eskom procedures, standards, and approval processes.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety requirements and quality control standards applicable to grid-connected infrastructure projects.
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., MS Project, CCS Candy, Primavera P6).

Key Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong understanding and practical use of construction programmes (Gantt charts) for planning and tracking progress.
  • Thorough knowledge of contract obligations and the ability to manage site activities in compliance with contractual requirements.
